When Buying A Tent You Should Consider The Hydrostatic Head And The Sun Protection Factor
META: There are certain aspects that we must consider when buying a tents for camping. Two of these important elements that you must contemplate while purchasing a tent are the hydrostatic head and the sun protection factor.
Tents are available in various kinds of material that are suitable for different weather conditions. Canvas, cotton, nylon, polyester and felt are all fabrics that are available. Canvas can become very bulky when it's absorbed a lot of water so bear this in mind. On the other hand polyester and nylon are lightweight and do not take in much water and so with the right kind of coating they can become completely waterproof. The harsh UV rays and constant exposure however, will tend to wear the fabrics over the years. Each tent, therefore needs to be tested to see how much resistance it will take against natural conditions such as the sunlight and rain.
Polyurethane is commonly used as a coating on nylon and polyester tents. The coatings are available with different resistance power and the strength of this resistance is generally measured in Hydrostatic Head. The more the Hydrostatic Head the greater will be the durability of the tent and the longer will its coating last. Rain is calculated in milimetres and indicates the resistance of the force of the water that is required to enter the fabric. More pressure is added by a heavy down pour in comparison to that of a light shower.
If a fabric indicates a hydrostatic head of 1000mm, it can be classified as good enough for a light shower. A hydrostatic head of 1500mm in a tent fabric is appropriate for summer camps while 2000mm fabrics are durable for more weather types like 4 season tents. Groundheets can exceed the limit of that of a flysheet which can be a good 5000mm or above. If you are going on an expedition you need a tent fabric with a hydrostatic head of 3000mm.
The other aspect that we must take into consideration while selecting a good quality tent is the sun protection factor. You should only expose yourself to the harsh ultraviolet rays of the sun for so long, so be sure to check the SPF or sun protection factor as this will show you how long you are allowed to expose yourself for. The SPF number ranges greatly; remember to select one that offers you the maximum protection from the sun. Just as tent fabrics are checked for their water resistance, similarly they are marked for their UV protection, which is generally between SPF35 to SPF50. Tents are available with higher SPF protection; the only problem is you will pay extra.
However it is always more sensible to buy a tent that provides you the maximum SPF protection because you are outdoors for several days and need the best safety measures for your skin. Ultraviolet rays can be very harmful to your skin, so make sure that the tent you buy gives you a good amount of safety from the suns rays by blocking the rays from penetrating the tent fabric.
While your tent takes care of you, it is also required that you take equally good care of it. It is important to store it correctly without too many folds or bends, especially after it has been subjected to torrential rain or extreme heat. This will ensure it lasts longer. Signs of wear and tear of the tents fabric will be clearly visible at the folds. So make sure it protects you as much as you protect it.
Camping Mattressess
Camping mattresses are no longer available in standard weights and in only a few colours. There are many so many important factors to consider before buying a camping mattress especially since there are a number of different types on the market today? Objectives issues for consideration are raised in this article, prior to buying.
Most camping mattresses that you buy now are of exceptional quality. Yes you still can buy the very thin and cheap camping mattresses that do very little in terms of providing comfort and warmth, but overall, the world of camping mattresses has evolved significantly over the last few years. If you want luxury then you can have it, since camping mattressess are now a multi-million pound industry!
But there are some basic considerations to take into account before you splash out on a top of the range mattress. If there are two of you and your tent is very quaint and your mattress is larger than the standard then your quaint little tent will suddenly feel very small indeed. So make sure that any mattresses that you buy will easily fit into your tents for camping.
Mattressess that inflate are currently very popular, but you need to be able to inflate them.Comfort is essential when camping so the fact that you are effectively supported by air equals a pleasurable camping trip! For those who are a little lazier, self-inflating mattresses are also available but these tend to be a little more expensive.
A good camping mattress should protect you from the cold or dampness, so really the thicker the mattress the better. If you are laid on a thin mattress you will feel the cold much worse. You may also find that you are pretty stiff the next morning, so thickness is a prime consideration whilst taking account of the space it will take up.
Space is actually an important issue. If you are travelling by car then you don’t need to worry about weight or how much room your mattresses take up, but if you are travelling by bicycle or hiking, then do you really want to be carrying thick mattresses and a pump to inflate them? Think about the weight involved as well.
So a good mattress is dependent on a number of factors, balancing comfort, thickness, weight and how you are travelling.Be careful not to buy a super de luxe mattress that takes up the whole of your rucksack, buy the one that suits your needs.
The best place to pitch your tent?
Campsites may be organised or somewhere you select on the spur of the moment. But there are some considerations that need to be taken into account before you commit to a camping site.Let's look at how to choose the right campsite for anyone.
You can't pre-order a suitable campsite. It may suit some tents and campers but it won't suit everyone. However, there are some basics that you should be aware of before you set up your tents for the night.
A campsite only has two meanings.First there is an organised campsite with facilities like running water, tilets & showers, and maybe even a shop and laundry. If you want a campsite with these extras, just remember that extra facilities attract more people so more noisy nights.Larger sites may even have entertainment or a bar - and this can make nightimes noisy. If parties and noise appeal, this type of site will suit - otherwise look for a different campsite that will be quieter.
The second type of campsite that you will come across is a site that you choose to pitch your camping tents, which is not an organised campsite. This might be in a farmer's field or open spot.If a field, you need to ask the farmer. Do not assume that you have the right to pitch your tent there: some farmers do not allow camping and get angry when campers assume they have the right to camp on fields.
The more isolated the location, the less likely good water for boiling and drinking/washing is.Bottled water is fine, but don't forget about water. You also need to consider toilet facilities. If there is a pub nearby this would be handy, but do not ignore the fact that you will need ot go to the toilet at some point!
Pitching your tent in a valley may cause you to be flooded out. Also be careful of water - lakes, rivers and canals can attract rats and insects.
But so long as you consider the issues above and choose what is right for you and for your needs, then you should have a great experience camping and have a comfortable stay.
